1-7 Winter Roundup

Boys hoops streak ends at 5; wrestling effective at 2 tourneys; ice hockey drops a pair in the hills.

Mullen’s upbeat five-game winning streak in boys basketball ended on Saturday.

At Hutchison Fieldhouse, the Mustangs faded late in a 73-66 loss to Denver South in nonleague.

Mullen stands 6-5.

The Mustangs opened crisply, rolling to a 25-13 lead after 8 minutes, but were outscored over each of the final three quarters. Turnovers hindered Mullen as did the lack of interior defense.

As usual, Jordan Leslie topped Mullen scoring. The junior, Colorado’s fifth-leading scorer (25.0 ppg.) entering the game and tops for the state in points per a full game (32 minutes, 29.0 ppg), went for 24 points. He was followed by Anderson Brendle (19) and Ish Aceves (11).

Mullen will resume action on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 7 p.m., at The Hutch against Legend. The Mustangs won the earlier meeting, 86-71 on Dec. 17 in their Christmas Classic Tournament.
