Wrestling shines; ice hockey gets 2nd victory; hoops drops two.
 
With four individual champions, Mullen boys finished in third place on Saturday in the always high-end Mel Smith Invitational at Florence.

The Mustangs totaled 143 points behind Eaton (210.5) and Brush (164).

Individually, Tony Herrera, Dale O’Blia, Isaak Chavez and Kaleb Valdez-Lemos were weight-class champions.

Herrera (20-2) won by decision at 106 pounds; O’Blia (18-3), a two-time Colorado champion, won by technical fall at 113; Chavez (21-4) earned a decision to take 138; and Valdez-Lemos won at 175 through a decision.

Gilbert Antillon was sixth at 126.

O’Blia was honored as outstanding wrestler of the lower weights and Valdez-Lemos was tops among upper weights.

The Mustangs will resume competition on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 7 p.m., at Cherokee Trail in Aurora, a Centennial League dual match.

In girls, the Mustangs were 10th at the Arvada Invitational.

Jzunie Jones improved her record to 12-3 with a decision in the title bout at 170.

Maggie Martinez moved to 5-4 by taking third at 190.

Mullen girls next will be at the Denver West Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 21.

As for the latest On The Mat rankings heading into the weekend (Mullen is in 3A), O’Blia was first at 113; Valdez-Lemos first at 175; Herrera was second at 106; Antillon third at 126; and Chavez third at 138.

And as a team, Mullen is third in 3A behind Eaton.

Ice Hockey

Late Friday night in Littleton, the Mustangs notched their second victory of the season with an 8-2 decision of Pueblo County in nonleague at The Edge.

Overall, Mullen is 2-8.

The Mustangs scored twice in each of the first two periods and put it away in the third with a four-goal barrage.

Eight Mustangs scored goals -- Joshua Fisher, Ciaran Dooley, Miles Fusting, Michael Gifford, Ben Hollingsworth, Leo Mansfield, Cooper Oatman and Archer Shea.

Hollingsworth added three assists for a four-point game. Mansfield contributed two assists.

Cooper Puckett turned in 17 saves.

Next for Mullen is a 4A North Division game against Kent Denver on Friday, Jan. 20, 7:45 p.m., at the University of Denver.

Girls Basketball

The Mustangs lost 67-57 to Rocky Mountain in 6A nonleague at Hutchison Fieldhouse.

After its first 11 games on the road, Mullen has played its most-recent two at home and dipped below .500 at 6-7.

The four-time defending Colorado champions were in it from start to finish, but the Mustangs’ array of turnovers, many self-induced, were too much to overcome.

Eight Mustangs found the scoring column, topped by Allison Schwertner (11 points), Sofia Zienkewicz (10), Ryker Thomas (nine) and Keaton Arangua-Egbert (eight).

Next for Mullen is the beginning of the Centennial on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Overland in Aurora, 5:30 p.m.

Boys Basketball

In Highlands Ranch, the host Falcons beat the Mustangs 73-55 in 6A nonleague.

Mullen is 6-7 and has lost three games in succession.

The Mustangs will resume play on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Overland in Aurora, 7 p.m., in the Centennial.
