Mullen girls continue to play outstanding golf.

On Monday, Kaitlin Zingler shot 1-under-par 72 to finish first and lead the Mustangs to a runner-up finish as a team at the Ashley Forey Invitational at Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden.

When considering the ever-changing conditions this spring season that have included usual high doses of wind, rain, snow, cold and gloom, as well as courses being closed for months and a series of no-school days, head coach Kate Walker is immensely pleased.

“I would say it has been a challenging season,” she said, “because it’s very hard to keep the momentum between weather, we had spring break, Easter break … it just seems like we’ve had a lot of stops and starts.”

Getting back into a flow can only be good, she said, as “the last few weeks we’ve had regularly scheduled tournaments and more consistent play.”

It has been led by Zingler, the University of Denve signee who turned in five birdies, did not have a score higher than five and went a consistent 36-36 on a course known for its quick greens.

Zingler won by a stroke and was one of only two players to break 80.

Jane Gray shot 90 to tie for 12th; Sammy Yates was a stroke back at 81; and Riley Sullivan shot 95 to account for Mullen’s scoring.

The Mustangs will resume action today, April 25, at Kennedy Golf Course, a makeup of the season’s initial Centennial League tournament that was postponed because of inclement weather. A shotgun start is scheduled for noon, but a storm is forecasted for late afternoon, and Walker said there’s a chance the field may only be able to get in nine holes.
