Dino paces effort, but Montrose dominates again.

Mullen boys golf finished fifth for a second consecutive year in Class 4A.

The Mustangs tied with Cheyenne Mountain at 47-over par, a distant 42 strokes behind Montrose, which won a third consecutive championship.

Competing at The Bridges Golf Club in Montrose, junior Mario Dino led Mullen with a two-day total of 12-over. He tied for 18th after finishing seventh a year ago.

Another Mustangs junior, Rhett Johnson, tied for 21st at 14-over; senior Eli Marquez tied for 37th at 21-over; and Cole Reister tied for 42nd at 23-over.

Dino shot 77 both days, Johnson 80-76, Marquez 81-82 and Reister 82-83. The Mustangs never really got going over the par-71, Jack Nicklaus layout. They were good enough to stay within range of runner-up Pueblo West (plus-40) as well as Ponderosa (plus-42) and Frederick (plus-46), but the Indians, playing on their host course, were simply too much.

Montrose senior Micah Stangbye, who won his second medalist title, was brilliant over the two days. He went 67-66 with 10 birdies and only one bogey. He won by nine shots over Northfield’s Hunter Swanson and Discovery Canyon’s Kaden Ford, who both shot even-par 70-72.
