Molly Zink, a setter for the volleyball team, also set herself up through the opening months of the coronavirus (COVID-19) the best she could. The senior writes for Mullen Today’s Unordinary Times about under-estimating the power of the COVID-19 at its outset; missing friends, teammates, family and being a manager for another sport; trying to stay positive; and not forgetting the fun she has had as a Mustang the past four years.
No one expected COVID-19 to be like this.
I was expecting a full senior year, which included spending time with friends and family. I am forever thankful to have played my senior-year volleyball season with friends and teammates.
My heart goes out to all the senior athletes who got their seasons cut short. I was looking forward to being the girls lacrosse game-day manager this spring season. It would have given me a chance to spend more time with friends and learn about a new sport.
This has been a time of adjustment in all areas. From staying home, online school and not seeing friends and family, it has been challenging. It reminds me to appreciate each moment and not to take anything for granted. That is why we all need to stay home and be safe, so life can go back the way it was before the pandemic.
I enjoy reflecting on memories that I was able to make before our lives were turned upside down. I try to stay active and take advantage of all this extra time to try new things. My older sister came back from college, so I get to spend more quality time with my family before I leave for college.
And I look forward to the drive-through tour (on Sunday), so I can say my final goodbyes to the teachers and Mullen staff.
I am preparing for college this fall, when I will be attending Loyola University in Chicago.
As the school year comes to an end, I thank my teachers; Mr. (Jeff) Howard, our principal; administration; coaches; and everyone else involved that made the online transition as easy as possible and made these last four years at Mullen High School fun and memorable.
