Mustangs suffer road loss at Creek

Mistakes, foul trouble hurt Mullen in 77-57 loss at the top-ranked Bruins in Centennial League play; team is 1-1.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE – It got away from Mullen early and there was nothing it could do about it.

The Mustangs fell to Cherry Creek 77-57 on Friday in Centennial League play at Kirby Lyle Gymnasium.

Mullen dipped to 1-1 overall and in league. Cherry Creek, top-ranked in Class 5A, is 2-0.

According to coach Bob Caton, “we started out fairly well, doing what we needed to do.”

However, some mistakes arose as did Bruins all-stater Julian Hammond.

“Then we commit a couple of turnovers, Hammond hits some deep (3-pointers) and the next thing we know, we’re behind,” Caton said.

Plus, senior pivot Brayden had foul trouble.

The Bruins led 43-25 at halftime and cruised.

“This is a learning tool,” Caton said. “They’re the No. 1-ranked team in the state and we have to learn from it.”

Carter led the Mustangs with 18 points. Josh Lopez added 12 and Micah Leslie eight.

The Mustangs will be back at it on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at home against Smoky Hill, 7:15 p.m., at Hutchison Fieldhouse.
