'Stangs finally get to play pool
After having difficulty landing a pool for use and a bout with the coronavirus (COVID-19), Mullen opened its season; it began with a loss, but it's in the swim of things.
AURORA – After a delayed start, Mullen opened its girls swimming and diving season on Tuesday with a 133-41 defeat at Cherokee Trail in the Centennial League.
The Mustangs didn’t have all of their competitors and only had a few practices after having their opening meet at Cherry Creek the previous week cancelled due to a case of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
As it was, diver Romie Gutierrez and swimmer Gabrielle Zinis took firsts for Mullen. Gutierrez won diving with 131.70 points and Zinis won the 50-yard freestyle (26.12 seconds).
Lindsey Sowitch (200 freestyle, 1:59.52), Zinis (100 freestyle, 58.00) and Sahara Zurita (100 backstroke, 1:03.28) contributed runners-up showings as did the Mustangs’ 200 freestyle relay team of Sowitch, Jill Kulbacki, Zurita and Zinis, 1:40.80.
The Mustangs, who are practicing in the evenings at Smoky Hill in Aurora, will be in a dual meet at the Buffaloes pool today, 5 p.m., in league.
