Mustangs handled by Grandview

Troni and Valdez-Lemos earn decisions, O'Blia wins by forfeit; Mullen falls 63-13 in the Centennial League.

Mullen was tamed on Friday by visiting Grandview, which took a 63-13 decision in Centennial League wrestling in the school’s Green Room.

Head coach John Howes said he knew what the Mustangs would be facing.

“We were flat,” he said. “And I had to remind myself that that’s not a bad team; they’re pretty good, they’re pretty good.”

The Mustangs could only manage three victories --  a major decision by 160-pounder Kaleb Valdez-Lemos, a decision by Mark Troni (145) and a forfeit victory by Dale O’Blia (106).

The Wolves won five matches by pin and Mullen forfeited five bouts.

In addition, Noah Linares remains sidelined by a knee-ligament injury.

Still, Howes said, “we’re coming along.”

The Mustangs will resume competition on Saturday, Feb. 6, in a quadrangular meet hosted by Rocky Ford. Pueblo East and Falcon also will be there. Pueblo East is ranked second in Class 4A by On The Mat and Falcon is seventh. Rocky Ford is rated sixth in 2A.

“It will be a test again for us,” Howes said. “We just have to match the intensity and physical-ness.”
