Fore! Girls golfers now on the tee

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Mullen girls golf, all but sidelined in 2020 by the coronavirus (COVID-19), can tee it up for preseason practice in the new Season D; six other sports will begin in a week.

(First in a series of previews for the new Season D.)

The new Season D, the cap to the 2020-21 school year during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, will have one of its sports opening Monday (April 19).

As usual, girls golfers are first on the tee.

Like every other spring sport in 2020, which either competed in one event or never got out of preseason, girls golfers were basically – and abruptly -- idle. In Mullen’s case, sophomore Sofia Choi, runner-up as a freshman, shot a 1-under-par 64 for second place in the opening Centennial League match, held at Springhill Golf Course in Aurora. Freshman Kaitlin Zingler was 11th with 76. And the Mustangs were fourth as a team.

However, that was it – the next day Colorado spring sports joined virtually the rest of the planet in shutting down.

In 2021, Choi, now a junior, returns. As a ninth-grader, she was only five back after the first round of the Colorado tournament (the second round was cancelled because of inclement weather) and could be the season’s top player.

Zingler, a sophomore, is consistently breaking 80, according to the Mustangs coaching staff, and Elle Deorio and Hannah Giacomin should battle to account for a productive third, increasing Mullen’s opportunities in team chases.

First match will be Thursday, April 22, Centennial League No. 1, 10 a.m., at Aurora Hills G.C.

There will be a maximum of 198 holes for 2021, with regionals June 7-11 and the state tournament June 21-22.
