'Stangs tear up Aurora track

Kaitlin Zingler wins with a blistering 5-under 67 and Sofia Choi is runner-up with 3-under 69 as Mullen also grabs 2nd as a team in a Centennial League make-up tourney.

AURORA – Kaitlin Zingler finished first and Sofia Choi second on Wednesday in leading Mullen to a runner-up finish in Centennial League Match No. 1.

The gathering at Aurora Hills Golf Course was postponed earlier in the new Season D due to inclement weather.

Zingler, a sophomore, fired a sizzling 67, 5-under par. She went 32-35 with five birdies and an eagle on the par-5, No. 8. Three of her birdies came on the front side.

Choi, a junior, was two back at 69, going 33-36 with six birdies, five on the front side.

“It’s exciting on a lot of fronts,” Mustangs head coach Kate Walker said.

Walker was rolling through her memory banks and said she “was thinking that in the history of Mullen girls golf, we’ve never had two girls below par in the same tournament and I don’t think we’ve had No. 1 and No. 2 in a league or any other tournament.”

What wasn’t unusual, she added, “is we always play Aurora Hills as one of our league tourneys and we’ve had regionals and state here, and the scores are always low.”

Still, she said, “it’s great what they did. And they took advantage of it.”

Hannah Giacomin (98), Kylie Morgan (112) and Brie Brocato (114) also teed it up for the Mustangs.

Mullen totaled 348 to Cherry Creek’s 312.

Perhaps a couple of the oddities most noticeable in this new Season D include few invitationals – there are usually several for girls -- and Mullen is playing an all-Class 5A schedule before heading to 4A for the postseason. Walker knows she and her girls won’t see any 4A opposition until regionals.

However, she said, “it’s great we have these opponents to compete against, really good athletes and teams in our league. I think it prepares us, but everything is kind of unknown.”

The Mustangs will head to Lone Tree G.C. on Monday for the next league match. It will be hosted by Mullen and Arapahoe. First tee shots will be at noon.
