It was a laugher relative to sports, but Mullen wasn’t foolish.
No, the Mustangs, who rolled Wheat Ridge 96-40 on Friday at Hutchison Fieldhouse in a consolation game of their Christmas Classic Invitational, used the minutes to try to improve.
Mullen climbed a bit to 2-4.
“Fool’s gold,” Bob Caton said. The Mustangs head coach didn’t want inflated egos and attitudes during and after his team dismantled the 1-3 Farmers.
“We were trying to work on some things and we did get some things accomplished,” Caton said, “just some things we need to do to get better.”
The Mustangs were committed to pressure defense, options on different sets and staying sharp.
“We just try to, like, simple it down,” said junior Hunter Lay, who topped the Mustangs with 16 points, “so we can have it when we need it.”
Mullen ran to a quick lead, never trailed and rang up a program-high in points since Caton took command in 2017-18. It also scored 63 points in the middle quarters, 35 in the third. The Mustangs also canned 14 3-pointers.
Thirteen Mustangs scored. Josh Lopez (15 points), and Ethan Heffern and Jordan Leslie (10 each) reached double figures. Lukas Castillo and Jack Diasselliss both scored nine.
Mullen will play for fifth place on Saturday against Aurora Central, which outlasted Legend 78-75 in overtime, at 2:30 p.m.
