Beck, Vanek spur victory

Mustangs run past Columbine 16-6 in nonleague; Grandview in league is next on Friday.
 
Mullen bolted to a four-goal lead in the first half before running away from Columbine 16-6 in nonleague on a cold, wet Tuesday evening.

The victory at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium pushed the Mustangs to 2-1. The Rebels are 0-2.

“We played a lot better,” Mullen head coach Melynda Brown said of her team’s second consecutive victory.

The Mustangs led 7-3 at halftime and rolled to nine goals down the stretch.

Charlie Beck scored five times and Haley Vanek tallied four.

Jordan Weber contributed three goals, and Evie Beck and J.J. Johnson each had one.

Concerning assists, Beck had three and Vanek two.

In goal, Maggie Martinez didn’t see a lot of action, but turned in five saves.

“We’re looking forward to Friday,” Brown said as the Mustangs will open Class 5A East League play against visiting Grandview on Friday, April 1, 5:30 p.m.
