Big days for wrestling; ice hockey drops a close one at home.
 
In Overland Park, Kan., Mullen had three champions and two runners-up on Saturday in finishing third as a team in the two-day Blue Valley Northwest Husky Invitational.

Behind Kansas schools Andover (453.5 points) and Maize (419), the Mustangs totaled 380 in a demanding field.

Tony Herrera (106 pounds), Dale O’Blia (113) and Gilbert Antillon (126) emerged as weight-class winners for the Mustangs.

Now 27-2, Herrera turned in a rock-and-roll 12-10 decision in his finale.

At 113, O’Blia, a two-time Colorado champion, won his finale by 10-4.

And Antillon (25-6) pitched a 3-0 shutout.

Isaak Chavez (138) and Kaleb Valdez-Lemos (175) finished second.

Oliver Scelza (190, fourth), Estevan Loya (165, sixth), Cayden Robins (132, eighth), Ami Hall (215, 11th), Cooper Loth (144, 12th), Colin Hart (157, 12th) and Caleb Van Meter (Hwt., 13th) each contributed to the scoring.

In girls, the Mustangs had another three champions in the Denver West Downtown Throw Down in finishing 15th.

Cassandra Linhard (100), Jzunie Jones (70) and Maggie Martinez (195) each grabbed firsts.

All won by pin -- Linhard (5-8), Jones (12-4) and Martinez (6-5) won decisively.

Angelica Silva was third at 110.

Mullen’s boys and girls teams will resume action on Thursday, Jan. 26, at Arapahoe, 6:30 p.m.

And in the latest rankings by On The Mat, Mullen boys are No. 2 in 3A with Herrera, O’Blia and Valdez-Lemos earning firsts, Chavez a second and Antillon a fourth. For girls, Jones is seventh.

Ice Hockey

At The Edge in Littleton, the Mustangs lost 4-2 to Crested Butte in nonleague.

Mullen is 2-10 overall.

Archer Shea and Ben Hollingsworth had the goals for the Mustangs, both unassisted.

Goalie Logan Clothier turned in 39 saves for the Mustangs, who were outshot 45-17.

Next for Mullen is a matchup at Durango on Friday, Jan. 27, first puck to drop at 5 p.m.
