A Quiet Confidence Running Strong On the Gridiron

A Preseason Look

As the Mullen Football Team gets ready to embark on a new season, Head ‘ball Coach’  Jeremy Bennett says it means something special to wear the ‘M’ on your chest, and the team owes  a lot to those who wore it before them, and because of that, expectations for this season are where  they always are, high.
The Mustangs football team is expecting to be league champs. Last season  the team was young and managed to make the playoffs. Now, a year older the team looks to  build on the success of last season. They may not be as big as they were last season, but they will  look to capitalize on their elite athleticism on both sides of the ball. The Mustangs Defense will  be explosive this year led by AJ Guida, who last season was an all-conference player and has caught the eye of the next level, and as a result, he has received numerous D1 offers. Joining  Guida in an explosive front seven is Brennan Weaver who is a great athlete and can play  multiple positions including defensive end where he sits at the top of the depth chart. Also, in  the Linebacking group is Liam Finney who has a nose for the ball, plays downhill, and will  make plays for that unit this season. It is rare to see a freshman play well at the Varsity level, but  Nico DePizzol did that last season and will look to have an eye-opening Sophomore season. The  front seven on defense is solid but don’t overlook the back end of this defense. The DB’s go six  deep and will be relied on to make plays.
On the other side of the ball, Coach Bennett had high  praise for wide receiver Jordan Leslie, a player ready for a breakout season.  Leslie also holds several D1 offers and is arguably the best receiver in the state according to his head coach.

With the season on the horizon, every game is important, but for the Mustangs this upcoming season there are two games that have added juice and excitement.  One of those games comes in Week 5 as the Mustangs take on Pine Creek.  Last season’s game was heated, and Pine Creek got the better of Mullen but look for the Mustangs to flip this script this time around.  The second circled game is a conference matchup against Legacy High School where they look to bounce back after last season's tough loss.

The Mustang’s Football team has set some high goals for the team, and by working  together as one, they will, without a doubt, surpass those goals. Coach Bennett wants to continue  creating a family atmosphere on and off the field.  By leaning on the Lasallian tenet of an inclusive community, the team has fostered “AU USO MONI”, a Samoan phrase which means ‘True Brotherhood.’  As the 2023 season is set to kick off Friday, August 25th at 7pm against Columbine, the Mullen Football team has talent on both sides of the ball so this should be a  successful season for the Mustangs.
