by: Aaron Montgomery, Athletic Intern
  • On Monday of last week, the Mullen baseball team hit the road and took on Pueblo West High School at their place and got a much needed win, 3-2, to cap off their regular season.  On Wednesday, the seedings were set and Regional placements made for the eight region 4A Playoffs.  Mullen was placed as a 9-seed and on Friday headed to the No. 8 Regional hosted by 8-seed Thompson Valley.  In their first game of the Regional, Mullen played Mead High School, the #23-seed.  Mullen made easy work of the Mavericks, 7-1.  An hour after that game, the Mustangs took on top seeded Thompson Valley, and in a classic back-and-forth battle fell to the Eagles 10-9.

  • Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Mullen’s track and field athletes participated in the 4A State Championships at Jeffco Stadium.
    • The Girls team finished in 13th place and scored a total of 19 points.  Their relay teams led the way.  The 800 Sprint Medley (Valladares, Anderson, Lousberg, Brown) finished 2nd (1:49.07), the 4 x 1 Relay (Valladares, Elms, Anderson, McCarthy) finished 6th (:50.03), and the 4x2 Relay (Valladares, Elms, Anderson, Lousberg) finished 4th (1:44.70).  Also adding points was 3200 meter runner, Genevieve Hockin, who finished in 9th-place (11:31.28).
    • The Boys’ track team finished in 25th place with 10 points.  They were led by senior Josh Sushinsky’s 6th-place finish in the 3200 meters (9:15.80) and senior Sam Puana’s 7th-place finish in the 100 meters (:11.02).  Also adding points to the team were senior pole vaulter, Luke DeNezza (13-01) and 400 meter runner, junior Josh Gross (:50.07)
The girls’ golf team, by virtue of their 2nd-place Regional finish, is at the 4A State Championships in Colorado Springs.  The State tournament is Monday and Tuesday of this week.
