It was one of those nights.
They were missing their No. 2 scorer, shooting made it seem like the rim was covered, they were regularly a step slow on defense and energy also was at a season-low.
At Hutchison Fieldhouse, Mullen’s Mustangs came out on the short end of a 60-46 nonleague loss to Legend on Tuesday night to fall to 6-6 on the season.
They have dropped two games in a row after winning five straight.
Bluntly, head coach Roosevelt Leslie said he wants his guys to forget this one.
“Tough start,” he said. ”We had no energy, we were missing (Anderson Brendle, the team’s seond-leading scorer and a perimeter threat, out with sickness).and we didn’t get it done. We needed a shooter in that (Legend) zone and it stopped our tempo in the first couple of quarters.”
The Mustangs trailed for nealy all of the 32 minutes, made only 16-of-61 shots and dug a big hole early.
Even when Mullen forced some up-tempo moments and got within 11 points twice down the stretch, it added turnover problems and came up short on defense as Legend enjoyed a series of uncontested shots and used superior height inside effectively.
The Mustangs also came within a point of matching their season-low total and trailed 29-15 at the half.
Jordan Leslie topped Mullen with 18 points
The two teams had met on Dec. 17, when the Mustangs won 86-71 in their Christmas Classic Tournament..
Mullen will have one more nonleaguer before heading into Centennial League play next week. On a somewhat rare Saturday night matchup, Jan. 14, it will be at Highlands Ranch, which began the week ranked No. 10 in Class 6A. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. and Coach Leslie foresees possibilities for his team.
“It’s a great opportunity for us,” he said.
