It was almost as if football was trying to get away from Harrison Schmitt.
While at Bishop Machebeuf, the Buffaloes were unable to field their own team after his sophomore season. So Schmitt transferred
to Mullen.
Following his senior season in 2021, the offensive-tackle prospect opted to enroll at Baylor, where he said he was told he could be a possible walk-on. However, after several frustrating rounds of seeking information about joining the team, ultimately finding out he had about as much of a chance as a Denver player telling new Broncos head coach Sean Payton how it’s going to be and realizing that Waco, Texas, is not the place for him, Schmitt remained undeterred.
“They were being dismissive,” he said of Bears officials.
None of it made Schmitt blink.
Last week, he signed to play at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., an interesting, successful NAIA program and popular college choice for Mustangs alumni.
“The faith piece is there for him,” Mullen head coach Jeremy Bennett said. “And it just makes sense.”
Benedictine, Schmitt said, “came with the recommendation “from a lot of family and friends, and “(the Ravens) made me feel super-welcome … like, with what they’re building down there. Even though they’re NAIA, they’re the best program at that level.”
Schmitt was a two-way, all-league lineman at Mullen in Class 5A in 2021 and now stands 6-foot-6, 250 pounds. He hopes to get to 280 by the time the season begins and is eyeing 300.
“It’s a great deal,” Bennett said. “They’re getting a very, very athletic 6-6, 250-pound kid who will work tirelessly.”
After a semester at Baylor, Schmitt has been taking a class locally and serving as an intern of sorts in the Mullen Sports Performance Department while working with coach Candice Walls.
Also an excellent student, Schmitt remains uncertain about his major. He said he may stick with neuro-science or it may end up between biology and business.
Schmitt will head to Benedictine in the coming months and is thrilled the opportunity to play football is assured.
“I’m just super-excited to get back out there,” he said.
