Mullen baseball got the news as to where it will head for postseason play.

Now, the Mustangs have to go and do something about it.

They are in the Class 4A playoffs, the first time in decades they haven’t been among Colorado’s big schools, and in Region 4 to be hosted by Golden. Mullen, the No. 13 seed, will take on No. 20 Montrose at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The host Demons will meet No. 29 Denver North at 12:30 p.m.

Winners will play at 3 p.m. for the opportunity to advance to the double-elimination 4A Championship Series.

Mustangs head coach Phil Stanford has been stressing the “next-game mentality,” and is aware of early exits in recent seasons.

“We know what’s in front of us and what we have to do,”vhe said.

Mullen has received contributions from throughout its lineup in 2023.

Andres Bertaud, Ryan Brady, Dom Gamueda, Sage Hurley, Ben Krza, Ryan Jackson, Colin Mackenzie, Thomas Stewart and Gus Peonio have carried most of the load.

Overall, Mullen is 14-9 and was 4-3 in the 5A-based Centennial League.

While they are unfamiliar with the three other teams in their group -- according to MaxPreps records that go back to 2008, the Mustangs haven’t played any of them during the span – quick learning will e involved in their preparation.

“It’s time to go and play,” Stanford said.
