HIGHLANDS RANCH -- Mullen’s baseball season got off to a rousing start … too bad it will be the Mustangs’ last game for a while.

With an 11-1 road victory at Highlands Ranch in five innings on Thursday, the Mustangs began what was going to be a series of away games. Earlier this week, Mullen officials were the first to announce a shutdown of the school and eventually declare all Mustangs spring sports will be played away until further notice.

Later, professional and college leagues announced shutdowns, as did numerous high schools across the country.

Plus, final rounds of the Colorado basketball state tournament were canceled late Thursday night.

So Mullen, not knowing it would be its last game until at least next month, went ahead and enjoyed its opener.

On the mound sophomore righthander Trevor Moore threw the first two innings, surrendering one run, one hit and three walks. He struck out five. Senior Alek Elges handled the final three innings with no runs, one hit and four strikeouts.

At the plate, the Mustangs banged out 11 hits, three by Moore, who also drove home four runs.

Sophomore Henry Stewart had two hits and an RBI, and Nick Perri had two hits drove home one and scored three times. A.J. Naha, who tripled for an RBI; Andrew Brady; Ben Martinez; and Steph Loya each hit safely. Loya added two RBIs. Kevin McGuire drove home two without a hit.

However, the Mustangs, as is the case with other sports in Colorado, are slated to be sidelined through at least April 6.
