Making the most of it, Issue 35

Kaleah Mitchell-Ruff, Mullen Junior
Sprinter Kaleah Mitchell-Ruff, like so many others, has been slowed by the coronavirus (COVID-19). In writing for Mullen Today’s Unordinary Times, the junior shares her shock at how quickly everything was shut down, the adjustment of being home and realizing an opportunity when she sees one.

This whole experience has been crazy.

I never realized that my last day of going to school would be two months before school actually ended.

All I knew was that the track season had just started and that I was going to go to school. That quickly got turned upside down when the whole state went on lockdown and my track season was cancelled.

I still don't know how to process this. The rest of my junior year was spent at home. At first, it was very weird being at home all the time, but now I'm sort of used to it. I’ve had to keep myself busy by drawing, going on walks, at-home workouts or anything that will keep me distracted from the fact that I’m stuck at home.

I’ve realized that I’m a fairly active person, so without being active for a long period of time I get restless. I’ve gone on a few jogs and tried to get onto the track for a quick practice. Doing some small workouts inside have helped as well. It feels better to be outside.

In some ways this quarantine has helped me. I’ve been more productive with my school work and I’ve been able to keep up with my everyday chores. Without having to go to practice for two hours or much less go to school, I have a lot more time to do things I’ve haven’t had the chance to do.

I’m very conflicted on if I like being at home all day or not, but either way I have to make the most of my situation.
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be at home like this, so might as well be productive.
