Eli Kerschen, Student-Athlete of the Week

High-school sport: Soccer (forward, leads the team with 26 goals and 13 assists).

What I’ve done lately:
Scored two goals and added an assist on Wednesday as the Mustangs handled Mead 7-1 to advance to Saturday’s Class 4A Colorado Quarterfinals.

Grade-point average:
4.02.

Class:
Senior.

Why I attend Mullen: I just love the community at Mullen and I think the soccer team shows what Mullen is all about as far as a bigger community. You have that inclusive community at Mullen, one massive family, and I think it really comes out with the sports teams. It’s what drove me to attend Mullen in the first place.

The best thing about my sport:
I’d say the guys I get to play with and the coaching staff we have. I’ve always loved playing for Mullen. I know sometimes you don’t get along with teammates, but I’ve always loved them.

In my future:
I kind of have tunnel vision, I’m looking at the playoffs and the state championship. I’m also looking at college, seeing if I can play and what’s ahead of me. I’ll major in finance.

Pre-Match ritual:
I am a little superstitious, there are a few things I do … I always wear whatever our warmup is, never wear the jersey before the game; the last song I listen to with headphones is “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins, I get to the famous drum part, listen to a few more words and then turn it off; and I never tie my shoes in warmups, hold my shin guards and put the captain band on.

Favorite college team:
Kansas State in a lot of the categories, mostly basketball and football, it’s where my parents went.

Why I play:
I just love it! I’ve gotten that question a few times from different people and what sticks
out is playing with other people or by myself, and I just love it. When I take my cleats off and leave, I sit there wondering why I’m leaving. I just want to go back out there and play for another hour or two. It’s not just an escape; it’s something II want to do every day,
