January Term

January Term (J-term) is a unique offering at Mullen that enables our community to live the mission and core values of our school by exploring new passions, interests, and interdisciplinary ways of learning about the world and ourselves.
    • Students are able to complete lifeguard certification during J-term to help with summer jobs.

    • Student volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and help build homes for the under privileged in Denver.

Through a modified schedule and course offerings outside of the regular curriculum, J-Term provides teachers and students a space to be immersed in an environment that fosters lifelong skills, including creativity, curiosity, risk-taking, collaboration, and design thinking.  We offer a range of options to help students explore and discover their passions.  To travel the world, to learn a new art form, to dive deeper into history, learn to drive, or intern at a company to find a career path.

Session Information

Students are expected to take a different session each year.  Students should carefully review the course offerings and make informed choices, paying particular attention to the details of each session.  Students have the opportunity to learn more about each course before registration. Students will be asked to select 3-4 courses and register for them within the published timeline.

All sessions are philosophically based on our Lasallian mission. Each session is developed and/or coordinated by a faculty member. All sessions correspond with one or more of the following categories. Students are encouraged to take a course from a different category each year.
  1. Cultural, Educational and/or Career Exploration
  2. Recreation and/or Physical Wellness
  3. Service and/or Spirituality

Frequently Asked Questions

List of 2 items.

  • What do I do if my child arrives at school late or has an early dismissal during J-Term?

We kindly request that parents and students refrain from scheduling appointments during J-Term unless absolutely necessary.  If this is unavoidable, please call the attendance line as you normally would.  If your student is off-campus and needs to leave early, the parent must pick their student up from the J-Term location communicated by the teacher, if applicable.  An early dismissal pass will be sent to the student.  The student must show this pass to the teacher prior to leaving their J-Term location.

If your student arrives at school late and their class is traveling to a location, and they miss transportation to the J-Term location, they will remain on campus for the remainder of the school day.

  • What if my child becomes ill and they are off campus.?

All teachers will have a Medical Emergency Form for all their students, which includes Emergency Contacts.  Teachers will contact the parent to come and pick their student up if the student is ill.

Current Mullen Student on the impact of J-term

It [J-term] has allowed me to re-engage with the things I used to love doing as a kid, namely creative pursuits, and to "feel like a whole person again"; I realized I had lost some of that amidst the busy schedule of school and sports. I am doing Chess and Greek Myths, which I like a lot, but more so, I go home feeling energized and wanting to do more - I started doing things like jewelry making, drawing, cooking, and journaling again.
