Academic Travel

The Mullen Academic Travel Program, like everything we do at Mullen, is inspired by the work of St. John Baptist de La Salle. De La Salle sought to educate poor, working-class French children so that they could become productive and moral members of society.  More than 300 years later, this fundamental Lasallian mission remains unchanged. Today, Mullen High School recognizes that participating in and learning about the global community (and the global Lasallian community) prepares students to look outside of themselves, better allowing them to become successful citizens in the 21st-century world.

The Academic Travel Program seeks to create relationships between our students and the larger global community by allowing students to learn in a hands-on way in international (and domestic) settings by tapping into our faculty expertise at Mullen and the larger global Lasallian community.
Because these trips are integral to the fabric of who we are at Mullen High School, students will be held to the same high behavioral expectations while traveling that they are held to when at home. Please direct further questions about Mullen’s Academic Travel Program to Tim DeNezza, Director of Academic Travel.

Lasallian Five Core Principles influence Academic Travel

List of 5 items.

  • Quality Education

    • Academic Travel Classes start in the classroom before the trip departs. Students either learn about a topic during J-Term or in a handful of classes that meet outside of the school day. These classes will prepare students for the trip, providing them with the crucial background information necessary to make the most of their trip.
    • After developing a basic understanding of a particular topic, students board a plane and head out to see it all firsthand. For example, students traveled to Florence and Rome to learn about the Italian Renaissance. They will go to Costa Rica to study the ecology of tropical rainforests, to the United Kingdom to experience what inspired the great British authors, and to Spain to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and culture.
    • These trips also allow for cross-curricular connections as Mullen teachers across departments craft itineraries that allow students to learn in unique ways.
    • As a result of the academic nature of these trips, students can earn ¼ of a credit for Academic Travel; however, these credits do not count towards graduation requirements.
  • Faith in the Presence of God

Academic Travel expands our faith by connecting us to our global Lasallian network.  If possible, while traveling, we hope to meet up with students from other Lasallian schools in order to:
    • Open dialogs between students with shared Lasallian and Catholic values in different parts of the world.
    • Remind our students that they are part of a huge faith community.
  • Respect for ALL Persons

    • Travel takes students out of their comfort zone and exposes them to a diverse world.  At a time in their lives when students are so inwardly focused, travel encourages students to look outward and examine the world around them so that they can appreciate different cultures and places while recognizing our shared humanity.
  • Concern for the Poor & Social Justice

    • Service to others is not only a founding principle of the Lasallian charism it is also fundamental to the tenets of Catholic Social Teaching.  Therefore, service should be an indispensable part of these trips.
    • Finding meaningful service opportunities on international trips can be difficult. To remedy this, we will leverage our Lasallian counterparts wherever we travel to help us identify areas of need in their schools and/or communities.
  • Inclusive Community

    • Mullen will work to offer financial assistance to students to help make these trips more accessible.
    • Additionally, trip schedules will be set well in advance so families have time to plan and save for trips.
