There was a delay in tee times because the course wasn’t quite ready, it was the team’s first outing of the season and play lasted until it was quite dark and the clubhouse had closed.
Still, Mullen girls golfers debuted on Tuesday by hosting a three-team gathering at Englewood’s Broken Tee Golf Course. Cherry Creek took first with 326, Mullen had 354 and Colorado Academy had 388.
Individually, the Mustangs’ top player, Kaitlin Zinger shot 8-over-par 80 for third place.
But what really mattered, Mullen head coach Kate Walker said, was being able to get out and play.
It hasn’t been easy.
“We’re not starting (the Centennial) League until next week and I thought it was important to have the girls play 18 holes before the first league tournament,” she said. “This year has been extremely challenging, not so much because of snow … just really cold weather. The courses have been closed and it has been just hard to get out and play nine holes of practice, not to mention go out and get in a round under tournament conditions.”
Zingler, who will play at the University of Denver, went 40-40 with birdies on the opening holes on both sides. She was followed by sophomores Riley Sullivan and Sammy Yates, who each shot 91; sophomore Jane Gray (92); Braelynne Lawler, another sophomore (116); and junior May Myles (121).
“I think the girls were not satisfied with their performances,” Walker said, “but given the hardships of the spring, I think overall we did well, considering it was, for many of our players, the first time they played 18 holes since last summer.”
The Mustangs will begin league play on Tuesday, April 4, at Kennedy G.C., first tee times at noon.
