All spots may advance to state.

In a season marred by a wave of delays, what’s one more day?

Mullen will find out if it can qualify at all singles and doubles spots on Friday after another impressive showing on Thursday in the first round of the postseason. The Mustangs advanced six-of-seven spots to next week’s Class 4A Colorado tournament in Pueblo and will have their No. 2 doubles team in a playback on Friday morning for a chance at a clean sweep.

A year ago, the Mustangs were represented at state at all positions and grabbed third as a team.

With 64 regionals points, they finished second to Golden (74) in the six-team 4A Region 3, split between Mullen and Pinehurst Country Club.
“I think you always want to do better and come out on top,” Mustangs head coach Jera Sturgell said. “But they were great matches, all of the girls played amazing, sometimes even beyond themselves. They stayed in there strong and fought to the end. Nobody gave up and they played every
point and showed heart and soul on the court.”

The finals round turned into a Mullen-Golden dual meet with the Demons taking five of the seven matches head-t0-head.

Mustangs top player Lauren Manwiller breezed at No. 1 singles, taking out the Demons’ Antonian Sloan 6-0, 6-0.

“It went pretty well,” said Manwiller, a sophomore. “It was fun and I got to support my team.”

Mullen’s No. 4 doubles team also was a winner, with Brooklyn Hanley-Parker Durand taking a 6-4, 6-4
decision.

The Mustangs’ other two singles teams had interesting matches with No. 2 Mikayla Phelps falling 3-6, 6-3, 1-6 and No. 3 Megan Sandy losing her two sets by tiebreakers.

In doubles, Jordan Cleary-Bella Wallrath lost at No. 1 by 4-6, 2-6; Abby Gilbert-Rebecca Watts lost at No. 2 by 6-7 (3-7), 4-6; and Chloe Golenzer-Tierney Scanlan lost by 4-6, 3-6. Gilbert-Watts will be in the playback on Friday, against a duo from Denver North.

Mullen’s immediate plans, Sturgell said, are to “get some practice in … the weather has been tough. We’ll take a minute to be thankful and be proud of what we’ve accomplished, but work on the nagging things, trying to get better.”
