Mustangs Fab 4 set to tee it up at 4A state

Mullen has a shot in Montrose at The Bridges.

It’s Colorado championship No. 1 in 2019-20 and Mullen certainly has a shot.

Plus, it’s golf.

The Mustangs are in Montrose to compete at The Bridges Golf Club Monday-Tuesday for the
Class 4A version of the boys tournament.

As one of the team qualifiers, Mullen will have Mario Dino, Rhett Johnson, Eli Marquez and Cole Reister also playing for medalist honors over 36 holes. Three scores count toward the team chase.
Bringing their ‘A’ games is a must – Montrose’s Indians are two-time defending state champions and the 2018 medalist is senior Micah Stangebye. And can you guess the team’s home course?

Yes, The Bridges.

If both the individual and team titles come down to the Indians and Mustangs, don’t be shocked. Montrose won the regional at Denver’s Overland G.C. by 12 shots over the Mustangs. Montrose turned in 3-under as Stangebye and teammate Jordan Jennings tied in regulation at even-par 72.

To a player, Mullen, headed by Johnson’s 3-over 75 at Overland, wasn’t thrilled with the individual regional showings, but embraced qualification.

“Absolutely,” Mustangs head coach Jerry Koehler said after being asked about his team’s state chances. “They just have to bring their game for that course.”

The back two tips at The Bridges, a Jack Nicklaus design, are listed from 6,722-7,017 yards.

First-day tee times for the Mustangs: Reister, No. 1 tee, 9:54 a.m.; Marquez, No. 1, 10:03 a.m.; Dino, No. 1, 10:12 a.m.; and Johnson, who will play with Stangebye, No. 1, 10:21 a.m.
