New head coach Dave Atencio eager to open work with Mustangs.
Mullen softball will step to the plate beginning Monday (July 6) for its beginning of OTAs (Organized Team Activities).
The new look will be under the leadership of first-year Mustangs head coach Dave Atencio, a decorated and well-known in-state leader who also had considerable success at the likes of Dakota Ridge in Jefferson County and Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch. Atencio was an assistant for the 2019 season.
The Mustangs will begin on Monday and go from 5-7 p.m., then Wednesday from 9-11 a.m.
Atencio said safety and moving forward are the most-important goals.
“The biggest thing for us, as of right now,” he said, “is we are still assuming that we will go live on Aug. 10 (the scheduled beginning of practice for the fall season).”
Mullen will have about 18 players to open OTAs, Atencio said, and the work to build the program will begin.
Atencio also said Greg Hogan, a former Mustangs head coach, will be one of the program’s assistants. Tony Lopez, also a longtime figure in the program, also will continue as an assistant.
