Wolves too fast for 'Stangs

Speedy Grandview runs past Mullen 21-13 to complete the 'Stangs' Class 5A East League slate.

AURORA – Mullen fell behind early and couldn’t catch Grandview in a 21-13 loss at Legacy Stadium.

The Mustangs dropped to 3-5 overall, 2-4 in the Class 5A East League. The Wolves are 6-2, 2-2.

“We didn’t come out with energy or passion,” Mustangs head coach Melynda Brown said of her team completing a new league schedule, “and we went down 9-2 in the first 15 minutes. We could not stop their fast break. We came back twice, but (the Wolves’) speed was too much for us.”

Molly Gilbert led Mullen with five goals and Elise Bialecki had three. Charlie Beck had two and Maya Dammen, J.J. Johnson and Haley Vanek all had one.

“Our draws and settled attack were great,” Brown said, “but we just came up short.”

The Mustangs also had a change in goal with freshman Dri Eckman, who turned in five saves.

Mullen will wrap up its regular season on Saturday, when it will host Cheyenne Mountain (3-4) in nonleague at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium, first draw at noon.
