4-16 Spring Roundup

Baseball bashes Bruins; girls tennis grabs a couple of match victories; girls soccer rolls Overland.

It is not rocket science.

Mullen knew it made a large variety of mistakes at home against Cherry Creek earlier in the week in an annoying, extra-inning loss.

So when the Mustangs faced the Bruins on the road in Greenwood Village on Saturday, the plan was simple – do what they do and they can win.

And they did with a 16-6 victory in five innings. It pushed the Mustangs to 9-3 overall, 3-1 in the Centennial League, a half-game behind Cherokee Trail and Eaglecrest for the loop lead.

“It was a good bounce-back victory,” Mullen head coach Phil Stanford said. “Our players knew we made mistakes in the game before (they led Cherry Creek 5-0 before losing 9-6 in 8 innings on Tuesday) and they just came out and played their game knowing we can beat (the Bruins).

“We played relatively clean baseball and everything else was clean, our offensive approach was good, we stayed aggressive and we didn’t turn it off. They did what they needed to do.”

The guy who did most of it was Henry Stewart. At the plate, he was 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, four runs scored and four driven home. On the mound, he was touched for six runs, but threw 99 pitches, struck out eight, earned the victory and refused to be replaced.

“It was Henry all the way,” Stanford said. “He kept (the Bruins) off balance, had really good command and knew what he wanted to do.”

The Mustangs had 12 hits. Andrew Brady had two and three runs batted. Trevor Moore also had two RBIs and Colin MacKenzie scored three times.

This week, Mullen will have a league home-and-away with Smoky Hill – in Aurora on Tuesday, April 19, and at Bill Swift Field on Thursday, April 21, both at 4:15 p.m.
