'Stangs complete league sweep

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Mullen rolls through Smoky Hill 15-1; Mustangs await 5A playoffs with 4th straight victory and 7th in 8 matches.

Monday’s victory served notice that Mullen boys lacrosse would place its first-ever banner on the walls of Hutchison Fieldhouse as Class 5A League No. 1 champion.

Wednesday’s victory, a convincing 15-1 thumping of visiting Smoky Hill at a cold, wet and dark Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium, clinched a sweep of the loop as well as an upbeat swing into next week’s postseason.

The Mustangs are 8-7 overall and finished 7-0 in league with their fourth victory in a row and seventh in eight matches.

They led early and often, rolling to 4-0 and 9-1 advantages.

Nicky Bond led the way with four goals, Luke Dempsey had three and Toby Grosso 2. Henry Bell, Chris Bougie, Rocco DePizzol, Luke Desautels, Connor Quinn and Connor Warren also scored.

Ethan Muller had two assists and Bougie, Desautels, Ed Konizeski and Warren each had one.

Noah Wanja needed to make just two saves, and Max Thomason and Jaxon Heil combined for faceoff victories 18 times in 19 tries.

As of late Wednesday, Mullen was tied for 22nd in RPI. Twenty-four teams will be in the big-school bracket.
