Various Mustangs were named to all-league and all-state teams for winter sports.
Mullen had three players in all-league basketball and two others for all-state in ice hockey.
For girls, freshman Megan Pohs was named to the Centennial League’s first team and junior Iliana Perez was selected for the second team.
Eight players were named to the first team and Pohs, a speedy guard who can play the point position as well as shoot outside and go to the basket, was the only player outside of two-time defending Class 5A state champion Grandview and Cherry Creek to make the group. She also was the only freshman named to the team.
“She was truly the heart and soul of a very young varsity team,” said Mustangs coach Frank Cawley. “She has tremendous basketball awareness and displays a competitive fire that is contagious. She has a great future in the program and we are looking forward to next season.”
Pohs was second on the team in scoring (9.0 points), and led the Mustangs in assists (4.0) and minutes played.
Perez, a swing player who also helped out front, “is a true offensive talent who battled injuries,” Cawley said, “but assumed a leadership role on the floor with a young varsity team. Iliana has shown great improvement on and off the court (the past season) and the team is looking to her continued growth next year as a senior.”
Perez averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.0 steals.
Mullen was 8-15 and missed the 4A playoffs.
For boys, junior Christian Davis was named to the Centennial’s second team. The 6-foot guard led the Mustangs in scoring (11.6 points) and was one of the league’s top 3-point shooters, making 46 percent of his attempts.
A regular starter who also averaged nearly two assists, Davis’ shooting range is considerable
“Yeah,” Mustangs coach Bob Caton said, “I think the way he shot the ball and that he was our top scorer and he was kind of our marked man … (opposing teams) had to try to stop him.”
On the ice, senior Matt Byerly wrapped up a banner season by being named all-state honorable mention. The center also was voted team MVP, played in the senior all-star game (he also scored a goal), led the Mustangs with 23 goals and topped the state in power-play scores with eight.
Connor Mahon, a freshman who does not attend Mullen but joins the Mustangs through a co-op, also made all-state honorable mention as a goalie.
In addition, Byerly, Mahon and John Witwer also made academic first-team all-state.
