Amy O’Connell

High school sport: Cross country and considering track in the spring.

What I’ve done lately: Has been the Mustangs’ most-consistent female runner all season, finished ninth this past Friday at Lincoln Park in Grand Junction, site of the team’s Class 4A regional-qualifying race later this month. She had her best time of 19 minutes, 35.39 seconds.

Grade-point average: 3.4

Class: Freshman

Why I attend Mullen: I attend Mullen because I really like the community and cohesiveness, and being a part of something.

The best thing about my sport: I like the challenge of it and I like the solitude of it, and I like how I think I’m good at it, but also because it comes with a big challenge.

In my future: I’d like to get a running scholarship and at least make it to state once as a cross-country team.

Pre-Meet ritual: I mostly just run, but we made up a cheer we do before the meet and that’s important motivation.

Favorite college team: No favorite.

Why I run: I feel like it’s different than most sports, it’s more like a mental sport, but it’s also really physical, too. I just like the real inclusiveness of the team. Everyone can run. It’s a natural thing for some people, but almost everyone can do it.
