Class of 2020 - Service Learning Graduation Requirement

Service learning is how students at Mullen live out the core principle of Concern for the Poor and Social Justice. As part of this, students are required to complete 70 total service hours while at Mullen, 50 serving marginalized groups and 20 serving your own Mullen community.  If students do not complete these hours their diploma will be withheld upon graduation.
 
During your junior year, Mullen transitioned to an online system of tracking service hours.  We now use Mobile Serve (https://mobileserve.com/).  To log hours please do the following:

1. Download the MobileServe app from the App Store or get it on Google play.
2. Using your mullenmail account, create a login. Also create a password and write it down somewhere so that you remember it.
3. Enter the class code 503274 when prompted.  This is the class code for those graduating in 2020.
4. Log your hours by changing the amount on the home screen. The next screen will give you an option to categorize the hours as "Mullen" hours or "Marginalized" hours.  Please refer to the chart below to help decide. The most important question to ask yourself is “who am I serving?”
5. Make sure to write a meaningful reflection for each service experience.  This will be done in the “description” section. This can be as simple as answering the following three questions: “Who did you serve?  How did you serve? and Why was this service important?”
6. Approval will be given by a signature or email address of your service-site coordinator.

Marginalized Hours
  • Open House
  • Campus/Garden cleanups
  • Teacher Workday Assistance
  • Managing Athletic Teams → up to 20 hours per season if you are not also an athlete on that team.  This is based on how involved you are with the team according to the coach.
  • Concessions and assistance at athletic events
  • Service done for your local faith community, e.g. altar serving  or helping in Sunday/Bible school
  • Tutoring on campus
  • Serving at hospitals, academic or athletic programs for marginalized children and adults, retirement communities/nursing homes, any shelter for a marginalized population, food banks, soup kitchens, community gardens in marginalized communities, helping elderly neighbors, helping those with physical or mental impairments
  • Immersion trips
  • Some specific events on school trips that were service oriented
Mullen hosted events that serve marginalized populations, e.g. Booville, Santa’s Workshop and Senior Citizen prom, may be counted as either Mullen or marginalized hours.  Students may NOT count them in both categories for the same service hours and the reflection must address how the service was to either Mullen or a marginalized group.
Any hours you did prior to your junior year may have been turned in on paper service forms we previously used.  These were submitted to Mrs. McCarty in 2017 and Mr. Gray in 2018. I have a spreadsheet with a record of these hours ONLY if you submitted a paper form.  All other service hours - those done during your junior year or later and those not submitted on paper previously - MUST BE LOGGED ON MOBILE SERVE.

I review all the service logged through Mobile Serve.  Here are some tips to help you in this process and identify hours you may have served.
  • Every student who is a senior should have completed the Freshman Service experience.  This will count as 5 hours of marginalized service if you went and have not already logged it on paper or through Mobile Serve.
  • Being a shadow host and Kairos DO NOT count as Mullen service hours.
  • There are many volunteer opportunities but not all serve Mullen or a marginalized group.  Babysitting, work with the Humane Society, cleaning up trash, volunteering at for profit race, and other volunteer work are all wonderful service, but they do not fit within our Core Principles.  
  • You need to identify a “supervisor” for your service.  You should include the supervisor’s email who can verify your service.  You do not need a signature as long as the email will be sent to them for verification. 
  • Please be specific in the “Service Organization” or “Description”.  “Mullen” is not an informative service organization but “Mullen Open House 2019” is appropriate.  
  • Please use the “Description” space to complete your reflection on the service experience.  Be sure to answer the questions: “Who did you serve? How did you serve? and Why was this service important?”
  • Please do not use acronyms.  I may not know what the acronym means and reject the service.

  • Mullen 24th Annual Track and Field Invitational - Saturday, April 4, 2020 from 7 AM to 5 PM

  • Senior Citizen Prom - Saturday, March 28, 2020 (setup after school on Friday, March 27, 2020)
Either Mullen or Marginalized Hours → Mullen Parent Association is the point of contact and there will be more information in the Mullen Weekly as the event approaches.
With your spring break and Easter holiday approaching you could also reach out to service organizations (e.g. Denver Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank of the Rockies, Catholic Charities, etc…) to plan service during your time off from school.
