It was an opportunity Jeremy Bennett couldn’t ignore – the position of head coach of Mullen football became available and he went after it … and landed it. In writing for Mullen Today’s Unordinary Times, Bennett weighs in on getting the job, using the tools and attitude he employs while coaching and remaining convinced that being part of a team is important to getting through the time of the coronavirus (COVID-19). And he’s thrilled to be a Mustang!
“TEAM” is a powerful thing!
It’s hard at times to fathom that just a little more than two months ago I landed my dream coaching job. The excitement and rejuvenation within me was at an all-time high and I was chomping at the bit to get started, and just like that the adversity hit.
For the first week of the shutdown, my mind raced a million miles an hour trying to figure out what and how we were going to move forward as a team, as a community and as a staff. As I processed what we were all going through it dawned on me that this was no different than a Friday night under the lights. Sure, the game was different and the opponent … well, the opponent was on a totally different playing field! As student-athletes and coaches, we’ve spent most of our lives learning how to handle adversity and overcome it, so why stop now?
My poor me attitude quickly changed back to excitement with that rejuvenation I had when I became the new head coach at Mullen. This was and is an outstanding opportunity for our TEAM to stand together and move forward the best we can.
Yes, it is going to look a little different, but as a TEAM we get to do it together, as a TEAM we get to face the adversity head on and pave our way, as a TEAM we get to grow with each other and as a TEAM we gain trust in one another.
This holds true for all TEAMs during this unprecedented time. It might be the administration TEAM or maybe the counseling TEAM, or maybe the faculty, which, by the way, is an amazing TEAM.
Whatever TEAM you are on, remember that we are powerful in numbers and when the adversity hits, you’re never alone when we’re on a TEAM.
Oh, and one more thing, always keep in mind that we’re on the most amazing TEAM in this state!
