Mullen High School Coaches’ Summit Inspires Faith, Leadership, and Education-Based Athletics in Denver

Mullen High School Coaches’ Summit Inspires Faith, Leadership, and Education-Based Athletics in Denver

Denver, CO — August 2, 2025 — At Mullen High School, a leading private, Lasallian Catholic school in Denver, education is more than academics—it’s a mission rooted in faith, community, and the development of the whole person. Inspired by St. John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers, our educators—both in the classroom and on the field—are called to provide a human and Christian education that touches hearts and shapes lives.

This commitment was at the forefront of the annual All-Coaches’ Summit, where Mullen’s athletic staff gathered to prepare for the year ahead with a renewed focus on Education-Based Athletics—a hallmark of Mullen’s approach to Catholic high school sports in Colorado.

A MORNING OF FAITH, FORMATION, AND GROWTH

The day began with Principal Sam Govea leading a heartfelt opening prayer, reminding coaches of their unique role in carrying forward our Lasallian Catholic mission. Breakout sessions quickly followed, offering expert-led insights in key areas:
    • Sports Performance with Candice Walls
    • Sports Medicine with Max Egyed
    • Admissions Overview with Lindsay Hooper
    • Campus Dress Standards with Melynda Brown
These sessions gave coaches the tools to not only strengthen athletic performance but also reinforce Mullen’s commitment to a values-based private school education in Denver.

    FORMATION: COACHING AS A CALLING

Hank Hooper then led a powerful formation session, challenging coaches to think like educators and embrace their role as mentors. Coaches rotated through additional workshops focused on the essential pillars of education-based athletics:
    • Social Direction with Joey Mahmood — building healthy team culture and relationships
    • Character Edification with Melynda Brown — instilling values that last a lifetime
    • Practical and Responsible Education with Hank Hooper — guiding athletes toward maturity and accountability
The program emphasized that Mullen coaches are more than leaders in sport—they are educators who embody the mission of our Catholic private school in Denver.

    VOICES FROM THE SUMMIT

"Our All-Coaches Summit is where our year truly begins. It’s a time to reflect, reconnect, and recommit to the work of shaping young lives through sport. Our ultimate goal is for every student-athlete to feel safe, supported, and to grow in both their love for competition and their relationship with Christ. We will continue striving for excellence together; rooted in faith, guided by purpose, and united in our Lasallian mission.”
    — Melynda Brown, Athletic Director
"The Coaches Summit is a great opportunity for coaches to come together, learn from one another, and grow in our craft. It was well organized and intentional. My staff was incredibly pleased with the morning, and I think it sets a great tone for the upcoming year. Professional development opportunities, like the summit, lie at the foundation of our quest for excellence.”
    — Matt Digits, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Coach, 2025 Independent Schools Coach of the Year (Colorado)

CONTINUING THE LASALLIAN LEGACY IN DENVER

For centuries, the Brothers of the Christian Schools have been charged with inspiring the minds and hearts of students, especially the most vulnerable. Today at Mullen High School in Denver, Colorado, our lay educators and coaches carry this legacy forward—helping student-athletes grow in skill, character, and faith.
Through gatherings like the All-Coaches’ Summit, we reaffirm that at Mullen, athletics are not just about winning games—they’re about forming young men and women who will lead with integrity, serve with compassion, and live out the values of a Lasallian Catholic education.

    Familiarity Breeds Success

by: Hank Hooper, Associate Athletic Director
Some say that just knowing is not good enough, but when stepping into a situation with a familiarity of the surrounding culture and knowledge of the players involved, it gives one a step up in their quest to accomplish remarkable things.  It is that precise knowledge that gives Ms. Carrie Copley a step up as she takes the helm as Head Softball Coach at Mullen High School.
